"Barbecuing is not difficult. You just need to take your time," this helped to win the Farm Bureau Cookout Contest at the 2007 Iowa State Fair. "Wearing the official cookout champion crown was a dream come true for a true barbecue lover like myself."

Jon learned to master the grill at a young age while growing up on his family's farm in Northwest Iowa. His dad butchered their own meat and taught him what to look for in a quality piece of meat. His parents, wife Robin, daughters Blair and Avery, and son Graydon (a barbecue champion in the making) were at the Iowa State Fair to cheer him on when he won the cookout contest.

"That's the part that was really great. I didn't pay to much attention to the surrounds that day. However with my dad being there, that really made me feel good...because he never thought I knew what I was doing (with the grill). Now all the sudden, I'm the barbecue advisor in the family. Barbecuing has become more then just a part-time hobby for me."

Jon's a member of the Lazy Toad BBQ crew of Centerville, IA. He developed the barbecue sauce that helped the crew win the group competition at the State Fair Cookout Contest in 2005. At the 2007 competition, he impressed the judges with his recipe for "Schmidty's Apple Ribs." The smoked baby back ribs were coated in a sweet-and-spicy barbecue sauce made with two unusual ingredients: applesauce and peach preserves.

"When you go to a restaurant and order pork, they often give you applesauce to dip it into. So that's where I came up with the idea."

Jon decided to bottle up his award-winning Gee Daddy's Sweet Apple Flavor Barbecue Sauce, to make it available for purchase by the public. Since bottling his Sweet Apple recipe in 2008, Jon has added two other blends to Gee Daddy's selection, an Original Flavor Sauce and BBQ Rub. Jon's secret recipe is produced by Triple K Manufacturing in Shenandoah, IA.
